Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was raised within Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young child. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could devote her day to art literature or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote political activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a strong social conscience and advised DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Even though DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family she was a summer resident with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma was the inspiration she used to produce a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in college. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the home of one of the members of the jury, and then examine their junk. When she was dissatisfied with journalism and the jobs she was given, DuVernay was inspired to start a new career in publicity. DuVernay got a job right out of college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also launched several marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
